Due to its origin on the English shores, Cricket is often called the ‘Gentlemen’s Game’.  While the nuances of the game have changed thick and fast over the course of time, a special act from Mark Stoneman stole the show in the Metro Bank One Day clash between Somerset and Middlesex.

Winning the toss and deciding to field first at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, panned out to be a fruitful decision for Somerset as they squared off against Middlesex. The bowling side drew early blood in the form of a brilliant run out followed by Riley Meredith firing rockets at the opposition batters. With a couple of wickets down by the third over, Mark Stoneman entered the fray and absorbed pressure for a brief period before Meredith added further inroads. However, Stoneman’s gentle gesture despite getting dismissed stole the spotlight in the encounter.

On the second ball of the eighth over, the Aussie pacer came a round the wicket to the left-hander and bowled a pacy delivery on a good length. The ball skidded off the surface with the inward angle, beating the inside edge of the willow and crashed onto the stumps. It sent the off stump cartwheeling off the soil as Stoneman failed to read the line of the ball, playing an on drive outside the trajectory. While the Somerset boys were seen celebrating the big wicket, Stoneman quietly went behind the crease picked up the shattered stump and rooted it before trudging off the field. The small gesture to help the umpires left the Twitterverse flooded as they labelled Stoneman personifying the Gentlemen’s Game.

Heart-winning Gesture from Stoneman !

Incredible from Mark Stoneman.

He's clean bowled by Riley Meredith - but before he walks off, he pops his off-stump back in the ground for the umpires.
