Faruque Ahmed named BCB President following Najmul Hasan Papon's resignation
In a shocking revelation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) underwent a swift change in the administration with Najmul Hasan Papon resigning from his post on Wednesday. Former National selector and Bangladesh cricketer Faruque Ahmed has been appointed to succeed him as the board's President.
BCB's umpires committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed confirmed the massive move in the Bangladesh cricket circuit to Cricbuzz. This is not the first time that Faruque have been handed over a crucial position in BCB. The 58-year-old played seven ODIs for the Tigers and previously served as the chief selector twice. He was appointed for the same role between 2003-2007 and 2013-2016. However, he resigned without completing his second tenure as he didn’t accept the expansion of three-member selection panel.
Faruque’s appointment comes after the resignation of Nazmul in the BCB director’s meeting on Wednesday. He attended the meeting from London after fleeing off from Bangladesh with his wife due to the political turmoil in the country.
Bangladesh cricket is undergoing a transition period due to the same reason with yet another major blow received on Tuesday. The 2024 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup was shifted to UAE after BCB failed to assure the other ten teams during October.
Currently, the Bangladesh Men’s team has traveled to Pakistan for a two-match Test series starting August 21 where the match is delayed due to wet outfield.
