Pathum Nissanka’s ton went in vain as Kandy Falcons beat Jaffna King by seven wickets at Dambulla. Dinesh Chandimal’s 89 set up for quickfire knocks from Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis that helped the Falcons bounce back after three back-to-back losses in LPL 2024, with a nailbiting win.

‌Eyeing to bounce back after a hat-trick of losses, the Kandy Falcons won the toss and opted to field first in sunny conditions. The bowlers failed to get the job done with the new ball as Pathum Nissanka took control of the game with an attacking approach, bringing up the team’s 50-run score by the fourth over. He quickly raced to a 21-ball fifty with Kusal Mendis playing second fiddle to a classy show. After a 69-run powerplay, Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis bowled tight before a six and four from Nisanka propelled Jaffna Kings to 110/0 in ten overs. The introduction of Ramesh Mendis into the attack broke the huge partnership before Rilee Rossouw accompanied Nissanka for a fifty-run stand before getting dismissed in the 15th over with the score reading 162/2. Subsequently, Nissanka slammed 22 runs in the next over, bringing up a 52-ball ton before Dasun Shanaka outsmarted him in the 18th over. This paved the way for four more wickets in the next couple of overs with Jaffna’s tally concluding at 224/7.

In response, Kandy Falcons were off to a cracking start as Dinesh Chandimal and Andre Fletcher took the scorecard to 33/0 in two overs. However, the opening stand was broken by Pramod Madushan when he scalped Fletcher in the third over. But that didn't dent their hope as Chandimal and Haris built a 38-run stand charging the scorecard to 72/1 at the end of the powerplay. They added 50 runs in the next four overs for the loss of Mohammad Haris with the score reflecting 122/2 in ten overs. Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis stitched 72 runs for the third wicket with both batters going berserk before the former got outsmarted for 37-ball 89. With 60 required off the last six overs, Angelo Mathews joined hands with Kamindu, extracting 55 runs in the next four overs to bring down the equation to five needed off the last two overs. Soon, Mathews smashed a four and a six to help the Falcons break their losing streak and leapfrog to the fourth position in the points table.
