Kandy Falcons keep their playoff hopes alive by securing a thumping win over the Dambulla Sixers by 54 runs. Impactful knocks from Andre Fletcher and the middle order set up Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka’s bowling beauty that kept the Dambulla Sixers at bay by 54 runs in match 18.

Eyeing to strengthen their playoffs case, Dambulla Sixers’ decision to field first backfired despite inducing an early wicket. Unfettered by the early dismissal of Dinesh Chandimal, Andre Fletcher peppered the spinners inside the powerplay with Mohammad Haris accompanying him to wrap up a 59-run powerplay. While Haris fell after the field restrictions, Wanindu Hasaranga joined Fletcher to set up a 101-run score midway through the innings. Subsequently, Dushan Hemantha bowled economical from one end and removed Hasarange before Fletcher clubbed three consecutive sixes off Nabi in the 12th over. However, Hemantha outwitted the ‘Spiceman’ to earn his third scalp with the score reading 127/4 in 13 overs. Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Mathews capitalized on the healthy run rate, amassing 49 runs in the next four overs. Although Nuwan Thusara Dilshan Madushan tried to curb the flurry of runs at the fag end, Mathews spoiled their plan by whopping four sixes in the last over and steering the Falcons to 222/4 in 20 overs.

In reply, the Sixers incurred early blows in the form of Reeaza Hendricks and Ibrahim Zadrin halfway through the powerplay. While Kusal Perera tried to counterpunch the opposition, Lahiru Udana failed to succor him as Dambulla scored 52 runs within the field restrictions. Right after, Mark Chapman played second fiddle to Perera who raced to 25-ball fifty before Wanindu Hasaranga’s introduction enforced further inroads. The Falcons skipper followed it up by removing Mohammad Nabi and on-song Perera quickly to reduce the Sixes to 138/7 in 17 overs. With 85 needed in the last three overs, the Sixers’ lower order succumbed to the loss by 54 runs, allowing the Falcons to leapfrog them in the points table.
