There has been an increased influence of data-driven statistics in the field of sport and cricket is no different. However, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto risked an unfavorable match-up to leave well-set David Miller fuming as Bangladesh and South Africa went loggerheads in New York.

The decision to bat first after winning the toss initially backfired for South Africa captain, Aiden Markram, as the Proteas lost four wickets inside the powerplay for a mere 25 runs. With a measured approach, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen fought adversity and orchestrated a 79-run fifth wicket partnership before the former followed suit the latter, courtesy of Shanto’s brilliant captaincy.

After Taskin Ahmed cleaned up the dangerous-looking Klaasen in the 18th over, Shanto decided to summon leg spinner Rishad Hossain who went wicketless for 28 runs in three overs, the worst economy among all Bangladesh bowlers then. The second ball of the penultimate over saw the audacious leggie bowl a tossed-up leg-break at the leg stump that Miller tried to heave across the line for a biggie. However, the ball stuck to the surface, resulting in the southpaw playing through the stroke early, and watching the timbers shattered.

It's quite uncanny of wrist spinners bowling in slog overs and that too against a well-settled left-handed batter as their stock ball comes into the batsman, making it easier to score runs. However, Shanto’s gutsy call paid rich dividends for Bangladesh, leaving Miller fuming and the Twitterverse in appreciation of the former’s captaincy.
