WATCH | Lawrence joins Flintoff in elite list after whacking five consecutive sixes as Bashir leaks 38
Records are meant to be broken and Dan Lawrence was on the verge of surpassing a 26-year record in the County Championship on Monday. He smacked five consecutive sixes against Shoaib Bashir in a 38-run over on Day 2 of the Worcestershire versus Surrey clash in New Road, Worcester.
Table-toppers Surrey were all set to take on the Worcestershire challenge in their respective ninth game of Division One. Jack Libby’s decision to field first did not pan out well for the home side as fifties from Dom Sibley, Ben Foakes and Jamie Smith propelled Surrey’s score to 340/5 at the cusp of Day 1. Dan Lawrence, who looked formidable on the first day resumed proceedings and went on to notch up a brilliant century. He was quick to switch gears, and to everyone’s surprise, the 26-year-old slammed five consecutive sixes against Shoaib Bashir in the first session.
With the score reflecting 437/9 after a couple of overs post-lunch, Lawrence was bound to take the aggressive route with a tailender. Bashir felt the heat as a floated fuller one from over the wicket was hammered down the ground by Lawrence to kick off the 128th over. A couple of more sixes followed on fuller deliveries before Bashir’s ploy to throw a widish delivery yielded a similar result as well. Eventually, Bashir came around the wicket to bowl a fuller one that was clubbed over cow corner to complete five consecutive sixes in the over. The spinner followed it up with a bye-four, wide, and a no-ball, eventually summing up an embarrassing 38-run over.
With this, Lawrence joined Andrew Flintoff on the list of hitting most runs in an over of a County Championship game, leaving the Twitterverse abuzz.
