One can expect great results when the execution put in is not so great. However, Shimron Hetmyer’s incredible athleticism neutralised a poor delivery from Moeen Ali to grant him a wicket in the second Qualifier game of the 2024 Caribbean Premier League at the Providence Stadium, Guyana.

Aiming to strengthen the chance for a final’s spot, Guyana Amazon Warriors sent the Barbados Royals to bat first during the toss. Opener Quinton de Kock faced most of the balls at the start but looked scratchy, departing for run-a-ball 15 off Gudakesh Motie. His opening partner, Rahkeem Cornwall followed suit inside the powerplay itself, making way for a brisk 37-run third-wicket stand between Alick Athanaze and Kadeem Alleyene. When the pair was at the crease, it left the Warriors on the back foot until an immaculate grab from Hetmyer in the tenth over.

The fourth ball of the tenth over saw Moeen come over the wicket and bowl a full toss outside the stumps. Alleyne tries to hack it over extra cover but ended up miscueing it off the top-edge of the bat. Hetmyer from deep cover sprinted a long way towards the ball before diving in front to complete a stunning sliding catch. Hetmyer’s magic was much-needed for the Warriors to get the much-needed breakthrough as Royals looked to accelerate with plenty of wickets in hand.

Hettie Brilliance!
