Brendon McCullum replaces Matthew Motts as England’s new white ball coach
In a massive development, former New Zealand captain and the current red-ball coach of England Men’s side, Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the team’s white-ball coach. After restructuring their Test setup, he will be responsible for bringing a change in the white-ball format.
The 42-year-old has agreed to sign a three-year contract as the all-format coach of the Three Lions. This means he will be overseeing the team’s fortunes until the 2027-28 World Cup in October-November. It also covers up the Ashes preceding the mega event in the same year.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I'm excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides. This new challenge is something I'm ready to embrace, and I'm eager to work closely with Jos and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place,” McCullum expressed.
The English team had seen a change in the players' body language in the ‘BazBall’ regime, and McCullum expressed interest in the role previously. The decision comes in the wakening of Matt Motts being sacked as the white ball coach following England’s poor run in the Fifty over World Cup and the Semi-Final exit against India in the recent T20 World Cup.
"Rob Key's vision for the future of English cricket is something that really resonated with me. The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule easing next year, made perfect sense. I'm energized by the prospect of guiding both teams and am grateful for the support from the ECB and my family as I take on these added responsibilities,” he added.
Marcus Trescothick, who was roped in as the interim head coach for the Australia series will continue his tenure for the white ball series against West Indies later this year. Right after, McCullum will begin his twin tenure in January 2025 with the India series and the 2025 Champions Trophy being his primary assignments.
Ricky Ponting and Eoin Morgan, two World Cup-winning captains were in the nominations for the role but the Dunedin-born's success in the red-ball format shadowed them. Additionally, Andy Flower was the other contender, who already served the team earlier and had little prospect for another run. It is also worth noting that McCullum is England's first all-format coach since Chris Silverwood's tenure ended.
