SCO vs AUS | Twitter reacts to Head Hurricane steamroll Scotland in Australia’s thumping win
Australia peppered Scotland by seven wickets and 62 balls in hand to go one-up in the three-match series. Following a disciplined Aussie bowling reducing the Scottish XI to 154, Travis Head’s dynamic 25-ball 80 coupled with Mitchell Marsh’s 12-ball 39 drubbed the home side convincingly.
Playing their first-ever bilateral series against an associate nation, Australia’s decision to field first after winning the toss paid dividends as Xavier Bartlet drew first blood in the second over. Unbothered by the early setback, George Munsey smacked the opposition pacers including back-to-back sixes off in the fifth over before getting dismissed for 28 to conclude a 56-run powerplay. Brandon McMullen followed suit in the next over before a 39-run stand followed between Richie Berrington and Matt Cross. However, the duo failed to prosper further as Adam Zampa edged past the skipper in the twelfth over. The lower middle order failed to shine despite their aggressive intent, losing five wickets in the last six overs for 41 runs to finish at 154/9.
Similar to their counterparts, Australia suffered an early blow as debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk got dismissed for a bronze duck. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were watchful in the first couple of overs before the pair freed their arms in the better part of the powerplay. The right and left-handed duo clobbered 20,19, 30, and 26 runs in the next four overs to stockpile a record 113 runs in powerplay, surpassing South Africa’s 102-run powerplay score against West Indies. The introduction of Mark Watt yielded a couple of scalps for the hosts, with Marsh and Head holing out in the deep on the first and last ball of the over respectively. With the score reading 123/3 in seven overs, the visitors needed just 32 runs from 13 overs, Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis added 18 runs in the next couple of overs before a couple of fours and a six drubbed Scotland with 62 balls to spare.
