England batter Harry Brook is set to take over as captain for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Australia. This will mark Brook's debut as captain of the Three Lions, stepping in for Jos Buttler, who has been out of action since England’s Semi-Final loss in the T20 World Cup in June.

‌Jos Buttler has faced challenges returning to cricket after the T20 World Cup, primarily due to a lingering calf injury. The 34-year-old missed The Hundred competition and was unable to captain Manchester Originals. Phil Salt stepped in as the Originals' skipper in Buttler’s absence, a role he continued when he replaced Buttler as captain for the recent T20I series against Australia.

Buttler’s absence paves the way for Brook to take on his first captaincy role with the national team in any format. Though this is his international captaincy debut, the 25-year-old has previously led Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. Brook has played 15 ODIs, accumulating 407 runs at an average of 29.07. Despite these modest numbers, England view the Yorkshire batsman as a future long-term leader, and his appointment means England will have used a new captain in all three formats this season.

Buttler's absence serves as a life-saver for Livingstone who might fit in the playing XI after a mesmerizing 87 off 47 balls in the second T20I against the Kangaroos. Initially left out of the squad, Livingstone earned a recall after this impressive performance in the recently concluded T20 series against Australia.

Meanwhile, left-arm quick Josh Hull, who made his Test debut in the final match of the Sri Lanka series earlier this month, was expected to join the ODI squad. However, a quad injury has sidelined him and he will rest in preparation for England’s tour of Pakistan next month.

England squad for Australia ODI series: Harry Brook (c), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, John Turner.
