Political turmoil has often been the center of intensified sporting rivalries. After the political tensions between India and Pakistan compelled the ICC to stage the Champions Trophy in a hybrid format, Saturday’s Ashes clash witnessed the Indian national anthem mistakenly played in Pakistan.

England and Australia looked to initiate their 2025 Champions Trophy campaign on a positive note as they squared off against one another at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. While the former was coming on the back of a 3-0 clean sweep against India, the latter suffered a 2-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka. Steve Smith, the stand-in captain of Australia won the toss and opted to field first under humid conditions. A surprising event stunned the English players as the players lined up in a queue for the national anthems.

As the camera focused on the English players completing their national anthem during their curtain-raiser against Australia, the music in charge at the Gaddafi Stadium played the Indian national anthem,” Jana Gana Mana” instead of Australia's, “Advance Australia Fair”. Although it was just a matter of a second before it was switched to England’s anthem, the Twitterverse found the Indian national anthem being played in Pakistan a point of discussion.
