Report | Rohit trains with Mumbai squad ahead of Ranji Trophy fixtures
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has joined Mumbai's training camp organized for the resumption of the Ranji Trophy, according to a report by ESPN Cricinfo. The veteran has struggled for form in red ball cricket of late but is not confirmed of a domestic return yetwith Mumbai yet to announce their squad.
Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma has returned to training following the conclusion of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia at his home ground in Wankhede. The 38-year-old was seen going through his paces at the ground's centre-wicket in a two-hour Mumbai net session with the Ranji Trophy set to return for its second phase from January 23. The record winners of the tournament are slated to play Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya in their two remaining group stage fixtures and currently sit third in the table with three wins from five games, behind Baroda and J&K respectively.
Rohit had last represented Mumbai in two 2018/19 Vijay Hazare Trophy games where he had ended up with scores of 33 and and an unbeaten 17. However, his last red-ball domestic appearance came way back in 2013 in the Irani Trophy, a few months before Rohit was handed his first Test cap, albeit the veteran did take part in a three-day tour game for Mumbai against New Zealand in 2016.
Rohit endured a horrible 2024 in the all-whites, both with the bat and as leader. The stalwart managed just 619 runs from 14 Tests at a sub-25 average despite hammering two centuries in a 4-1 series win at home over England. However, he has since become the second Indian skipper to be whitewashed in a multi-match series at home in the form of a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Kiwis before losing the BGT to Australia for the first time in a decade, managing just 31 runs in the latter outings at an average of 6.20. The situation became dire enough for Rohit to leave himself out of the playing XI in the final set but he has since reiterated the decision was not an indication of retirement.
India, having missed out on the World Test Championship final, are now slated to next play a Test in June when they travel to England for a five-match Test series. Head coach Gautam Gambhir claimed after the tour Down Under that decisions over senior players including Rohit shall be taken closer to the assignment while urging his men to play domestic cricket whenever possible but it remains to be seen whether the veteran takes up the adivce, given Mumbai are yet to announce their squad for the upcoming clashes.
