BH vs MS | Twitter sympathises as Weibgen turns hero to villain after superlative effort counts for nothing

Hugh Weibgen fell just short of pulling off one of the best catches in the history of Big Bash League in Brisbane on Friday. The Brisbane Heat batter took a one-handed blinder against Melbourne Stars at third man before touching the rope on his follow-through to extend Sam Harper’s stay.

‌Melbourne Stars got off to an aggressive start after being put in by Brisbane Heat in a Big Bash League match at the Gabba in Brisbane on Friday. The opening duo of Sam Harper and Thomas Rogers smashed three boundaries off Jack Wildermuth to plunder 16 runs in the first over of the game.

Harper continued to swing wildly, slashing Xavier Bartlett’s short of a length ball outside off stump in the third ball of the next over. The ball flew towards third man and Hugh Weibgen, who rushed in after an initial misjudgement, quickly adjusted to hop back.

He then leapt full stretch backwards to pouch the ball with his outstretched right hand before landing on his back. The momentum took him even closer to the rope as he ended up touching it while trying to get back to his feet.

Weibgen was shocked and disappointed as he threw the ball back to the field of play, with the umpire signalling a six shortly afterwards. The ball boys who were stationed beyond the ropes could not believe what had just happened as their celebrations were cut short after the fielder made contact with the rope.

Twitter was also shattered as Weibgen’s unbelievable effort could have easily been the catch of the season and one of the best in the history of BBL, but it was not to be.
