The row between India and Bangladesh has escalated to a great extent. With the ICC’s intervention, the Bangladesh Cricket team is having their World Cup spot in question. The decision lies with the BCB to forfeit their points in the tournament, which could have further repercussions.

The tensions between India and Bangladesh have grown a lot over the past few days. And this has even led to questions on Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. All of their matches of the tournament had been scheduled in India, but the team has now refused to travel to India.

Writing to the ICC for the same, they had requested to change their matches to Sri Lanka. The BCB hoped its demands would be accepted by the ICC, as they also cited security concerns. However, things have turned dramatically for Bangladesh, as the ICC responded to their demands, and might have also given them a stern warning.

1. Did ICC Warn BCB?

The sports advisor of Bangladesh Government, Asif Nazrul is actively having communications with the ICC. He also revealed that he wants the team to play the T20 World Cup. But citing the geopolitical tensions and security concerns, the team has demanded to relocate Bangladesh's matches to Sri Lanka. Nazrul also said that he will try to convince the ICC to do the same.

He said, “We sat together with the BCB directors - Bulbul [Aminul Islam] bhai, Faruque bhai and everyone else. Today we discussed the situation and we all agreed that Bangladesh earned qualification for the T20 World Cup through hard work. We are a cricket-crazy nation and we definitely want to play.”

Nazrul also revealed what the ICC had said in response to its formal request. The request to relocate the matches has been given status quo, and till now, no official decision for the same has been taken. The ICC also said that it has received no information related to the security concerns for the Bangladeshi team in India.

The Bangladesh Sports Advisor said that the team does not want to play in India. He continued by saying, “But we do not want to play the World Cup at the cost of national humiliation, at the cost of the security of our cricketers, spectators and journalists, or at the cost of the country's dignity. After reading the letter we received from the ICC today, it felt to us that they have not fully understood the serious security situation that has developed in India for Bangladeshi cricketers.”

Aminul talked about the rumours of the ICC denying relocation of Bangladesh's matches. He said, “There is a propaganda going around that the ICC has said playing in Sri Lanka is not possible. I would call that propaganda - false news. We have had one communication with the ICC. They asked what the issues were, and we informed them. We will now send them in writing what those issues are.”

2. How the Tensions Rise?

The tensions between India and Bangladesh have been pertaining over the last few months. It started to escalate a bit when the series between India and Bangladesh, which was supposed to take place in August 2025, got deferred to 2026. Till now, it is unclear whether the series will be taking place in Bangladesh or not in the upcoming months.

However, the tensions between both teams rose due to another reason. During the IPL auction, several Bangladeshi players also participated to be a part of the IPL teams. Mustafizur Rahman, the Bangladeshi pacer, was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for 9.20 crore and all set to play for the team in the next season.

But, after watching the communal tensions in Bangladesh, the BCCI had to take a move. They gave a directive to the Kolkata Knight Riders, that they should remove Mustafizur Rahman from the squad. Taking a look at the seriousness of this issue, Kolkata Knight Riders soon issued a statement that Mustafizur Rahman won't be playing for them in the next season.

And according to the statement, the team will be able to bring another player in place of Rahman. They will also be having the 9.20 crores with them, which will help them to get better players for the next season. But this decision taken by the BCCI had hurt the BCB badly, as they decided to escalate the issue.

They sent a formal request to the ICC, to shift their matches of the T20 World Cup from India to Sri Lanka. It is being reported that the BCB will now be having a meeting with the ICC officials by this weekend. This will help to decide what happens with this scenario in the T20 World Cup, which is just a few weeks away.
