The BCCI is about to announce its Central Contract for the upcoming cycle. This contract will be made public for the fans within the next few weeks and take immediate effect. But there are concerns on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who play just one format for the Indian team.

The BCCI Central Contract is about to be announced soon by the board. And this time, it is expected to have some massive changes which might even shock the fans. All the headlines have been evolving around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the stellar players of the Indian cricket team.

Rohit and Virat were a part of the A+ category in the previous central contract. Following that, both players retired from the Test format, leaving them with just ODIs. This has remained a major concern for the BCCI and the Indian team, to decide their fate in the Central Contract.

1. Rohit and Virat No Longer in Top Category?

It is now being reported that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will no longer remain in the A+ category in the Central Contract. Both players are now just a part of the team for the 2027 World Cup setup. After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, they announced retirement from the shortest format of the game.

The BCCI retained them in the A+ category for 2025-26 edition, as they were a part of the Test circuit. But the Indian team saw various players retiring from the Test format in 2025. This list also had the big names of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were not able to do well in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In May 2025, Rohit and Virat announced their retirement from the longest format of the game. And now, they are just left with the ODI format, where they have been rocking for the Indian cricket team. But, playing for the team in just one format and being a part of the A+ category was not possible for the legendary stars of Indian cricket.

According to the reports, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will now be moved to the B category. This comes as a massive downfall for both of them, as they are not just being shifted down one, but two categories down. Still, it is a wise decision made by the BCCI, as Rohit and Virat are now a part of the ODI setup only.

2. A+ Category to be Removed

The reports also add an interesting decision which might be taken soon. It is being said that the A+ category in the Central Contract will also be removed. This also means that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are likely to be among the last players who belonged from the top category by the BCCI.

If the reports are true, the BCCI will now be having just three categories in the Central Contract. This will be A, B, and C. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli likely to be a part of the B category, it is the second highest in the list. It also means that they will be receiving a salary of 3 crore INR per year by playing just one format for the Indian team.

3. Mission 2027 World Cup

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain in just one format for the Indian team, which is the ODIs. And it can also be said that they have been dominant for the team in this format, noting their form lately. Whether it was the Champions Trophy 2025 or bilateral series, both of them took their opportunities to shine well for the Indian team.

Rohit Sharma was able to win the POTM award in the finals of the Champions Trophy. Later he also won the POTS award in the ODI series against Australia. On the other hand, Virat Kohli seems to be back in his prime form, unleashing his inner 2016 beast yet again.

Kohli went on to win the Player of the Series award in the ODI series against South Africa. Later he also started the series against New Zealand by winning the POTM award. And taking a look at the ICC rankings, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stand among the top three players in the list. Both of them have been able to stand at the top in the last few months.

The 2027 World Cup is now a few months away, and before that, India has their eyes set on the T20 World Cup. While this would be the first edition of the tournament without Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, fans will still miss their presence. But they will be waiting more for India's upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan and England.
