Right before the Indian Premier League begins, the rule changes are making the tournament even more intense for the fans. Yesterday, the BCCI launched new guidelines related to the match-day practices and post-match presentation. And now, the IPL management has brought down some rules related to the new ball.
The new set of rules will allow the captains to take the second new ball in the second innings of the game. It can be issued to the teams after the 10th over, which means that they must use the existing ball till half of the innings is completed. Moreover, the new ball can be issued irrespective of the dew factor on the ground.

β οΈ Teams bowling second can request for a ball change once the 10th over is bowled.
π§Ball change can happen irrespective of the dew.
π The umpires will change the ball with another having the same wear and tear.
The new ball will also have the same wear and tear as the ball that has been replaced. Along with that, the umpires can also change the ball as per their discretion. It should be noted that the ball change cannot be requested during the over; it shall be done before the start of a new over.
Our Take
The new ball rule, which has been implemented in the IPL, is a great initiative to make the matches more fair and competitive. Since the majority of the IPL matches take place in the evening, the dew factor plays an important role for the chasing team. This rule has been brought to the game to negate the dew factor.

The bowling captains will be able to change the wet or slipper ball with a new ball having the same wear and tear. Bowlers will also receive some assistance, as spinners will also be able to find more grip, making things a bit challenging for the chasing team.
