Suryakumar Yadav Likely to Be Replaced as T20I Captain by This Player

Anupam Pandey

Suryakumar Yadav has been one of the most successful T20 captains for the Indian team. But he is now closing to his retirement age, and may not even be a part of the team till the next T20 World Cup. Amidst this, reports claim that the BCCI is looking at Shreyas Iyer as the new captain choice.

India has unleashed its T20I dominance ever since the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma was able to win the title for the team, following which he announced his retirement from the shortest format. He was succeeded by Suryakumar Yadav, who was also able to lead the team pretty well, and help it to defend the title.

Now India has won two consecutive T20 World Cup titles. Under the leadership of SKY, the team achieved various wins but he may not be the skipper till the upcoming edition. It should be noted that Suryakumar is already aged 35, turning 36 this year. By the time the next T20 World Cup arrives, he would be close to 38, nearing the retirement age.

And the BCCI has started to look forward to possible replacements for the same. Shreyas Iyer, the skipper of Punjab Kings, has come out as the top contender for the same. He has done some brilliant stuff as a captain in the IPL, leading his teams to three finals and even winning the IPL 2024 as a captain.

Our Take

Shreyas Iyer comes as the finest replacement for Suryakumar Yadav, both as a captain and a batter. While Suryakumar Yadav has struggled with his form lately, Shreyas Iyer has done well for his team even in the shortest format of the game. If the reports of Iyer being looked as the next captain are true, it would be great for the fans to watch Sarpanch Saab make his comeback to the T20I side.
