Bundesliga giants Bayern Leverkusen are considering a move for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen before the European window closes. The 32-year-old has become a mainstay in the Tottenham lineup, making just under 300 appearances for them since signing from Ajax, but has yet to play this season.

Defensive issues have not been a big problem for Tottenham over the last few years, thanks to the presence of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. But, this season that may change with one of the two defenders potentially on their way out. Both the center-backs only have one year left on their respective deals with Tottenham and Alderweireld has been heavily linked with a move away.

While nothing has materialized for the 30-year-old, the Mirror reports that Jan Vertonghen might have a chance to leave. The report adds that Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen are eyeing a move for the Belgian defender before the window ends, as they believe that his presence will help their cause this season. Under Peter Boscz, Leverkusen have turned into a genuine contender for the German top-flight title, but they still need a few defensive additions.

That combined with Vertonghen's age and experience makes him the perfect candidate for the Bundesliga side and the fact that the 32-year-old is yet to play this season for Tottenham and has just one year left on his current deal gives them hope. This gives Leverkusen a chance to make their move and the fact that they can offer him Champions League football, makes them a genuine contender.
