Chennaiyin FC appoints Scottish manager Owen Coyle as their head coach in place of resigned John Gregory. The former striker has a vast experience as a player and a manager in England and Scotland. Moreover, he coached Premier League sides Burnley and Bolton Wanderers.
The Scottish manager played a game for the Republic of Ireland and has two decades of experience in playing as a striker in English and Scottish and scoring over 200 goals. Owen started his managerial career in 2003 with Scottish side Falkirk as a co-manager and in April 2005, he was named as the new manager of Scottish side St Johnstone.
After he tasted success with St Johnstone, he moved to the English side Burnley FC and helped them earn promotion to the Premier League a season later in 2009. He then moved to Bolton Wanderers and spent three seasons with the club, finishing 14th, 14th and 18 before leaving. The 53-year-old manager then had short stints with Wigan Athletic and MLS side Houston Dynamos and moved back to Scotland to manage Ross County in 2017.
However, after his team club sitting in the bottom of the league, he resigned from the post. Chennaiyin FC are currently ninth on the table with just five points in six games. Owen Coyle has a tough task in strengthening the two-time champions as the southern side has scored only four goals (the least in ISL) this season. This is also Coyle's first assignment in Asia and it will be hard for him to adapt to the conditions.
