Former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is set to return to football management and take over the duties of managing Spain after taking a sabbatical for family reasons. On his return, he has asserted that Robert Moreno will not be the part of his coaching staff as he believed Moreno was disloyal to him.

Luis Enrique resigned from the role of Spain’s manager in June and his assistant Robert Moreno took over from him under the condition that if Enrique wanted to take over then he would be allowed to do so. However, with Enrique back, in charge of the Spanish national team for the Euro 2020, Moreno has stepped down with reports indicating that the former number two refused to leave.

However, in an interview, Enrique went on to reveal that Moreno wanted to be in charge at Euro 2020 before stepping down and becoming Enrique's assistant manager again. The Spaniard left the role after Spain's 5-0 win over Romania on 18 November and the former Barcelona manager also added that Moreno won’t be apart of his coaching staff as Enrique felt that his assistant was disloyal to him.

“The only person responsible for Robert Moreno not being in my coaching staff is me. He came to see me in my house and told me he wanted to lead the team at Euro 2020 and afterwards he would be happy to be my assistant coach again. I understand that he has worked very hard to be the coach and that he is ambitious - but for me that is disloyal. I would never do something like that and I don't want someone with those characteristics in my staff,” Enrique said to the BBC.

The coaching duo worked together at Barcelona, Roma and Celta Vigo and Moreno joined his coaching staff when Enrique was first appointed Spain head coach in July 2018. La Furia Rojas comfortably qualified for the Euro 2020 with 26 points in 10 qualifiers and claimed the top spot in Group F with Moreno leading the charge after Enrique stepped down.

“I understand his decision but cannot agree with it and told him I didn't want him as my assistant and that I felt strong. Ambition is to be encouraged but excessive ambition is a defect, not a virtue,” concluded the former Celta Vigo manager.
