East Bengal calls for postponement of CFL match, gets turned down
Kolkata giants East Bengal have asked the Indian Football Association to postpone their match scheduled on October 3 when they would be playing against Calcutta Customs Club for their coach wouldn’t be present for the match. However, the IFA won’t be reportedly considering the request.
With coach Alejandro Menendez not being present on the replay of East Bengal’s already postponed match with Customs, the club had asked to further push the match. However, the governing body of football in the state and the organiser of the League, IFA, hasn’t been very willing to change the date of the match, which has been scheduled at Kalyani Stadium on Thursday for a 2:30 pm kick-off.
“We have made full arrangements and are going ahead with the match as scheduled at Kalyani Stadium. It is now East Bengal’s decision to turn out for the match,” said IFA secretary, Joydeep Mukherjee, reported Sportstar.
“We have received a letter from the investor of East Bengal and the club requesting a postponement of the match owing to the unavailability of their coach (Alejandro Menendez) but we are sticking to the original schedule,” he added.
The secretary has further added that the final decision would be taken by IFA based on the referee’s report if the match didn’t eventually happen, “In the situation of the match falling through we will forward the referee’s report to the CFL (tournament) committee, which will advise us on the next move,” he said.
The real frustration would, however, be for Peerless SC, who have been the current leader on the points table with 23 points from 11 matches. With third-placed East Bengal needing to win their last match by a whopping margin seven goals or more, Peerless SC have virtually won the league but would need to wait until ten more days before celebrating.
