For the first time in his career, Robert Lewandowski is reportedly considering retirement if his stay at Barcelona does not extend beyond this season. The 37-year-old Polish striker’s contract with the Catalan club ends next summer, and according to several Catalan media reports, Barcelona have no plans to renew his deal. Despite scoring a hat-trick in Barcelona’s recent 4-2 win over Celta Vigo, the club is reportedly focused on rebuilding for the future.
Lewandowski, however, believes he still has more to contribute and would be willing to accept a reduced role, possibly as a substitute, if the club brings in another top forward. While many players in his age group opt for lucrative moves to Saudi Arabia or Major League Soccer, Lewandowski is said to be uninterested in leaving Europe, particularly because his family is settled in Castelldefels near Barcelona.
Unless a European club, such as the rumoured Atletico Madrid, offers him a competitive role without requiring relocation, the former Bayern Munich star might choose to end his playing career. Retirement, therefore, has emerged as a realistic option for one of football’s most consistent goal scorers if his Barcelona chapter concludes this season.
