Harry Kanes Late Double Saves England Against DR Congo
England booked a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 last 16 with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo in Atlanta. Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo an early lead in the 7th minute before Harry Kane scored twice in the 75th and 86th minutes. England will now face Mexico in the next round.

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, England survived a major scare to beat DR Congo 2-1 at Atlanta Stadium on 1 July and book their place in the last 16. DR Congo stunned England early when Brian Cipenga scored in the 7th minute from Charles Mbemba's assist. England struggled to create clear chances for most of the match as DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced a series of outstanding saves to frustrate Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and the rest of the attack.
England also received a huge lifeline just before half time when Yoane Wissa struck the post instead of doubling DR Congo's lead. With time running out, captain Harry Kane stepped up to rescue his side. He headed home Anthony Gordon's cross in the 75th minute to level the score before producing a brilliant winner in the 86th minute. Kane collected the ball outside the box, turned past his marker and fired a powerful right foot shot into the top corner to complete England's comeback.
Gordon provided the assist for both goals after coming off the bench. The dramatic 2-1 victory sends England into the Round of 16, where they will face co hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on 6 July. Despite the win, England's defensive weaknesses and inconsistent display remain concerns heading into the next stage.
