The Indian contingent put in a dismal performance at the Yonex – Sunrise Hong Kong Open on Wednesday with first round exits from all shuttlers. Sixth seed Srikanth crashed out against Tian Houwei, while Sindhu lost to World No.1 Carolina Marin.

Srikanthlost  to his arch nemesis Tian Houwei for a score of 16- 21, 21- 15, 22- 24.

Srikanth, who had reached the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open last year, got off to the worst possible start losing the first set for a score of 16- 21. However, he came back into the match by winning the second set 21- 15 with a commanding performance. The third and final set turned out to be a nail-biter with both players going neck-to-neck. Srikanth saved consecutive match points to stay in the game with the scores tied at 22-22, but two quick points from Houwei swung the match against him.

In the other men’s singles tie, Ajay Jayaram lost his first round clash against World No. 1 shuttler Chen Long 17-21, 12-21. The Indian shuttler had earlier lost against Long in the first round of China Open Super Series as well last week.

HS Prannoy who came up against Kenta Nishimoto of Japan also suffered a first round exit for a score of 15-21, 21-18, 6-21.

In the women’s singles, India’s only hope PV Sindhu was defeated by World No.1 and top seed Carolina Marin of Spain. Marin cruised past Sindhu in straight sets for a score of 21-17, 21-9.

In the women’s doubles section, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa bowed out of the tournament after losing to the eight seeded Korean pair of Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan. The Indian pair lost the match in 31 minutes for a score of 12-21, 15-21.
