Table Tennis World Championships | G Sathiyan last Indian in singles as Manika Batra, Sharath Kamal bow out in Round 2

G Sathiyan is the only Indian paddler left in the singles events after his victory in the second round of the ongoing ITTF World Championships in Budapest. Manika Batra has lost her women’s singles second round match while Achanta Sharath Kamal was also beaten in his second match of the main draw.

Sathiyan made it to the third round of the ongoing World Championships after an easy win against Cristian Pletea of Romania by 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6 points. The 26-year-old Indian paddler is also a part of the mixed doubles team where he is paired with Archana Kamath. 

On the other hand, after losing in the doubles category, Sharath Kamal and Batra also lost in the second round of the singles category to get knocked out of the Championships.

The 37-ranked paddler in the world Sharath Kamal was beaten 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 by Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar. In the women’s match, Batra lost 11-2, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 to world no. 24 Szu-Yu Chen of Chinese Taipei in the second round. The Indian female paddler had earlier defeated Serbia’s Andrea Todorovic while Sharath Kamal had beaten Uzbekistan’s Zokhid Kenjaev.

In another exciting battle in the women’s round of 64, India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee was defeated by world no. 31 Adriana Diaz. Mukherjee had earlier got the better of Germany’s Sabine Winter in the first round of the event.
