India v Australia | R Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev’s season wickets record

Recently records have been tumbling on regular intervals in India and R Ashwin has added yet another feather to his already overcrowded cap. Claiming the wicket of Mitchell Starc on the fifth ball on Day 2 of the Pune Test, Ashwin has overtaken Kapil Dev as the highest wicket-taker in a home season.

The record has been credited to the great Kapil Dev for almost four-decade but it now belongs to Ashwin. In the 1979-80 home season, Kapil Dev had claimed 63 scalps in 13 Tests against Australia, Pakistan, and England. Against the Aussies, Dev claimed 28 wickets at an average of 22.32. He followed it up by claiming another 32 against Pakistan at an astonishing average of 17.68. He capped off the season in the Golden Jubilee Test, against England, sending three Englishmen back to the pavilion.

Ashwin, however, has overtaken the legendary all-rounder after he dismissed Mitchell Starc in Pune to claim his 64th wicket and the record. India's long season has already seen the TN offie become the fastest bowler in history to reach the 200 and 250 wicket milestone but this one would rank right up there with all his other records.

The streak started against New Zealand where he ended up taking 27 wickets in three Test matches. Next up was England and they too struggled to play the Indian with any sort of conviction as he added another 28 wickets to the total. Bangladesh were the next team to turn up on Indian shores for a one-off Test, but they too could not stop Ashwin as he added another six wickets to the grand total. In the ongoing Test in Pune, Ashwin got the all-important wickets of Matt Renshaw, Steve Smith and the high flying Mitchell Starc to go clear of Kapil Dev's record.
