Former Sri Lanka skippers Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene might be included in the overhauling committee that will provide remedial measures to the Sports Minister for reviving the nation’s dwindling cricket. They will be joined by Aravinda de Silva and corporate honcho Hemaka Amarasuriya.

Reports from Sri Lanka’s Sports Ministry have hinted that the committee, which aims to get in experts who will provide long and short-term measures to Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera in recuperating the dwindling cricketing standards of the nation, are eyeing former cricketing stars Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene amidst other members.

Sri Lanka are going through a terrible patch at the moment. After experiencing a shocking series loss against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, they returned home to a 9-0 drubbing by India across all formats. The Thilanga Sumathipala headed Sri Lanka Cricket wasn’t very popular among fans and critics, and the poor form spurred vile protests from the supporters and ugly demonstrations on the ground.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and the whitewash was followed by a meeting held by the ministry, where all the stakeholders came together to discuss the next steps moving forward and the decision to form a new committee was made. Now, with Sri Lanka having qualified for the 2019 World Cup, the board will have very less time to sort out things.

Sangakkara and Jayawardene are likely to join former cricketer Aravinda de Silva and corporate head Hemaka Amarasuriya in the new committee, which will also include a senior sports ministry official. Amarasuriya, who has previously headed politically-appointed interim committees to run the cricket administration on two occasions since the late 1990s, is expected to play a huge role with his experience.

Earlier, Jayawardene had called for a change in the domestic club championship as he found too many mediocre sides lowering the standard of the competition. We expect to see a change in that aspect and more now.
