MS Dhoni will not impose himself on team if he decides to return, says Ravi Shastri

India coach Ravi Shastri has said that he does not expect MS Dhoni to impose himself on the Indian team if he decides to make a comeback into international cricket. However, Shastri also said that no one can mess around with his return if Dhoni believes he’s good enough after the IPL season.

Ever since the enigmatic former captain took a sabbatical from cricket after India’s heartbreaking loss to New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final, his speculated retirement has been one of the most discussed topics in Indian sport. Having been asked for his perspective on the matter in a soon-to-be-telecast interview on 'India Today' channel, Shastri refused to rule out a comeback by the 38-year-old.

"That (Dhoni) guy is a legend. The last thing he will want is to impose himself on an Indian team, having known him. He is wanting to take a break but he is going to play the IPL," Shastri said, reported PTI.

"The amount of sport he has played... if he puts himself in contention... if he feels after the IPL that 'I am good enough to play for India', don't mess around with that."

Dhoni, who recently turned down all questions on his future till January, was seen training with Jharkhand's under-23 team in Ranchi last month. Chairman MSK Prasad had made the national selection committee’s intention to move forward with Rishabh Pant as Dhoni’s successor. However, it is Pant’s own poor form, with both bat and gloves, that has triggered a fresh round of speculations of a possible comeback.
