Despite being one of the strongest sides on paper, the balance of Kolkata Knight Riders will be pivotal in determining how far the two-time former champions will go in the IPL 2017. The squad balance of the side on the given day will have a telling impact on whether the KKR can win a third title.

Overview:-

Kolkata Knight Riders have certainly come a long way since the inception of the IPL. After having endured a difficult start to their IPL sojourn by finishing in the bottom three in each of the first three seasons of the competition, the Shahrukh Khan-owned franchise have certainly made amends in the recent past, winning the title in 2012 and 2014 respectively. More importantly, they won 4 of their first 5 matches last season, but fell short in the eliminator to eventual champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, as they finished fourth.

And once again, the Knight Riders will start as main contenders for this year’s IPL as they possess one of the most balanced squads in the league on paper. Further, the additions of all-rounders Chris Woakes and Darren Bravo have certainly brought a lot more depth to the side.

Strengths:-

KKR’s all-round abilities are undoubtedly their biggest strength. Along with their ever-reliable skipper Gautam Gambhir and explosive batsman Robin Uthappa at the top of the order, they also possess the likes of Manish Pandey and Shakib Al Hasan in the middle order, who can alter their play according to the need of the game. Finally, the franchise also have two of the best finishers in the game in the form of Darren Bravo and Yusuf Pathan.

Their bowling department looks equally solid with the likes of Trent Boult, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Umesh Yadav. They also possess a very good spinning arsenal, which comprises of Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav.

In short, the Knight Riders boast of many match-winners with both- bat and ball.

Weaknesses:-

Knight Riders have been dealt a blow in the form of Andre Russell, who has been suspended for one year for failing to report for the dope test. Russell is certain to be a big loss to the Knights as he was instrumental in team's splendid run in last season and picked up three man of the match awards for his all-round performances. He was also their highest wicket-taker last year with 15 wickets to his name. And while Kiwi all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme been brought in to take his place, one will have to wait and see how things go for him.

More importantly, Darren Bravo may only be available for the first five of KKR’s 14 league games. Also, Umesh Yadav is set to miss the side's first two games, as he is nursing an injury to his right hip and also soreness in his back. Therefore, the likes of Trent Boult, Chris Woakes, and Nathan Coulter-Nile will have to spearhead the bowling attack, until the Indian is back.

From a tactical perspective, given that the KKR have a number of all-rounders in their squad, they need to find the right balance in their playing 11, according to the venue and the opposition. Last year, Gautam Gambhir was the highest run getter in the squad with 501 runs, however, the other batsmen too will have to contribute if KKR are to win their third IPL title.

Ideal Starting XI:-

Gautam Gambhir (C), Robin Uthappa (W), Manish Pandey, Ishank Jaggi, Yusuf Pathan, Chris Woakes, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Sunil Naraine, Kuldeep Yadav, Trent Boult.
