WATCH | Gujarat Lions fail to appeal for a stonewall LBW as IPL Umpiring mistakes continue
The umpiring standards of the IPL are plunging even beyond what folks witness during gully cricket. Umpire Nitin Menon missed one of the easiest LBW decisions to side with Kolkata in the match against Gujarat Lions today, continuing KKR's lucky run with on-field decisions.
The incident occurred in the 18th over, when Basil Thampi was brought back into the attack to follow up James Faulkner, who had given away just 5 runs in the previous over. 23-year-old Thampi was smashed for ten runs of the first two balls as Uthappa decided to up the ante. On the third ball, the KKR wicketkeeper tried to keep the pressure on the youngster by walking across his crease.
However, this time Thampi wanted to show why he has created quite a buzz in the IPL and appeared to have gotten his revenge as he trapped Uthappa in front of his stumps. The surprise was not that the umpire, yet again, got it wrong - it was that none of the Gujarat players, apart from Thampi, seemed interested in appealing for the wicket!
The replays showed that the ball had hit the batsman in front of the middle stump on his back leg. Ball tracking easily confirmed what everyone except umpire Nitin Menon saw, that the trajectory of the ball would have taken it to cleanly hit the leg stump.
