Big Bash League is known for producing high octane entertainment every now and then, with some of the best players in the format taking centre stage. Thursday had one such moment when Adelaide Strikers' Jonathan Wells left the commentators dumbfounded with his massive six that went to the SCG roof.

Strikers didn’t have a good start to their BBL campaign this season, losing both of their opening games and reeling at the bottom of the league table. And the crowd wasn’t expecting anything enthralling from the home side either, as they reached the 19th over with the scoreboard reading a feeble 150/3 in their match against Sydney Sixers.

However, with a well-settled Alex Carey on the crease alongside Western Australia’s hard-hitter Jonathan Wells, there were slim hopes of fireworks in the 20th over when Ben Dwarshuis came to bowl. It was on the fifth ball of the over that the incident took place after the duo could churn out just six runs from the first four balls.

Wells had already made up his mind before the ball even left Dwarshuis’ hand as he adjusted his position slightly to the right. The sudden shift in stance confused the New South Wales bowler, who decided to keep his ball to Wells’ body. However, it didn’t stop Wells from getting underneath it who knelt down on his right knee and launched it over deep square leg for a monstrous six. The ball, which travelled a massive 104 meter, remained on the roof of Sydney Cricket Ground. The commentators couldn’t believe the distance on the hit as they followed the skyrocketing shot with their eyes wide open.

“I’d seen one like this before when Hansie Cronje had hit Shane Warne on the roof but that was many, many years ago. That one stayed on the roof as well,” recalled one of the commentators.

Wells then finished off Strikers’ innings with another boundary of the last ball, ending the hosts’ first innings at 167/3.
