Sarfraz Ahmed will take over the responsibility of leading the Pakistan’s Test side after the retirement of Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Tuesday. PCB’s chairman Shahryar Khan gave the confirmation at a function that was organized for the Champions Trophy winning team.

Sarfraz Ahmed got the reward of his performance in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament where under his leadership the underdog Pakistan team secured their maiden CT title. Under his captaincy, the Pakistan cricket team not only stunned higher-ranked teams but also beat their arch-rival team India by an impressive 180 runs in the final.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif organized the function in Islamabad to honor the country’s cricket team where PCB’s chairman Shahryar Khan named Sarfraz as the new Test captain.

"I take this opportunity to announce Ahmed as our Test captain in addition to one-day and Twenty20 captain," Khan said as quoted by Cricbuzz. "I and Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq had decided already and I think this is the right time to declare it."

The 33-year-old, who is already handling the role of the captain in the limited over formats, said that he was honored to take up the responsibility of the Test team as well.

"I am honored to be appointed Test captain," Sarfraz said at the function. "I will do my best to lift the team in all three formats and will not rest on Champions Trophy laurels."

In the ICC Champions Trophy which was concluded last month, Pakistan lost their opening encounter to India but after that, they registered consecutive wins against South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the host England. After registering the win against Virat Kohli-led team India in the final, Sarfraz became the first Pakistan captain since the Imran Khan who won a 50-over world title in 1992.

Under Sarfraz's captaincy, Pakistan will play a three match Test series against Sri Lanka in October this year.
