Kapil Dev recommends that BCCI buy an aircraft to avoid player fatigue
Former India skipper Kapil Dev has suggested BCCI that they own an aircraft now as it would save a lot of time, prevent player fatigue and make life easier for Team India. The steering committee member has also suggested that Indian players should be allowed to participate in overseas T20 leagues.
Kapil Dev believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earns enough money to have its own aircraft for Team India. The 1983 World Cup winner is of the opinion that a private aircraft will save the players a lot of time and fatigue with the increasing number of series they have to play now.
Speaking to TOI, Kapil said, “Now that BCCI is making good money, it should have its own plane. It will save a lot of time and make life easier for Team India. The board can afford it. They should have done it five years ago. I also believe that if BCCI owns planes, the players will get enough rest between matches. I am sure BCCI can also afford the parking charges.”
He had shared this idea with the board three years ago, suggesting them to establish guest houses overseas to accommodate the players, rather than paying hotel bills. However, numerous controversies soon followed and the suggestion has been kept on hold since then.
This news comes after India coach Ravi Shastri has asked the board to plan the match schedules more effectively in a way that would allow the players sufficient breaks. In a video conference between the head coach, BCCI chief Rahul Johri and the Supreme Court appointed member of CoA, Shastri stated, “Such tight scheduling gives the players little time to recuperate.”
Indian team have just returned from their 9-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka across all formats and they will aim for three back-to-back home series against Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka before they tour South Africa later this year. An Airbus A318 plane, which will cost around Rs 500 crore and accommodate just over 100, could be a good solution.
Kapil Dev, who is one of four members of the steering committee that was formed by Lodha panel recommendations to help in the formation of a players' association, has suggested that Indian players should be allowed to participate in different T20 league outside of the IPL.
He said, “I completely agree with BCCI that if a player is contracted, he will have to obey BCCI. But if they are contracted, the Indian players should be allowed to play all over the world… Stopping them from earning isn't the right thing to do… You can't own a cricketer."
