Former Indian player, Kris Srikkanth, has reiterated the Significance of CSK skipper MS Dhoni as he labeled him the undisputed leader of the yellow brigade. Srikkanth believes that the Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have been the two strongest teams of the IPL since its inception in 2008.

The return of Chennai Super Kings meant that the most successful team of the IPL is now part of the league once more after serving the two-year ban imposed on the team due to their team principal's involvement in betting. With crowd-favorite MS Dhoni back in the yellow jersey to lead the ‘whistle-podu’ gang once more, the sky is the limit for the Stephen Fleming-coached Super Kings.

Former CSK ambassador Kris Srikkanth in his column for TOI stressed the importance of Dhoni’s presence at the helm of affairs for CSK. The seasoned Indian wicket-keeper has led the Chennai-based franchise to two IPL trophies as well in his tenure as captain.

“MS Dhoni remains the undisputed leader of the pack. His captaincy skills will also be tested as he has not led the Indian or his IPL team in close to two years. In a way, CSK will be trying to find their feet, and they could have only hoped for a slightly less intimidating opponent.

“It’s only obvious that all the talk is surrounded on CSK’s return after two seasons. Even though they have many of their old players in the mix, what one has to understand is that they have not played as a unit for a while. To get used to each other’s role will be the biggest challenge,” Srikkanth wrote.

Apart from CSK, Srikkanth reserved praise for Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians who have proved to be worthy opponents to Dhoni’s CSK. The two teams have built a strong and healthy rivalry amongst them which has benefited the entire league.

“In my opinion no two teams would make for a better inaugural tie than Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Not only have these two sides been extremely successful, they are also the two outfits that crack the right combination, early in the tournament.

“Apart from showing the nous to pick high impact players in the auctions, Mumbai have also had the knack of nurturing players well. The Pandya brothers, Rayudu, and Rana are glowing examples of how they were allowed to express themselves on the biggest stage,” wrote Srikkanth.
