India vs Australia | Tremendous feeling to get India cap, says Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal has stated his excitement on receiving the India Test cap and while calling it a "tremendous feeling", added that he will cherish these moments for the rest of his life. Agarwal scored 76 runs on his debut and in the process became top run-scorer on debut for India in Australia.
Mayank Agarwal became the 295th player to represent India at the International level in the Test cricket when he made his debut in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He also proved the decision to pick him into the team a right one by scoring a fluent 76 run innings on debut and in the process helped India reach 215/2 at the end of the day’s play in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
"It was a tremendous feeling to get the India Test cap. I had a lot of emotions (running through mind) when I got the cap. I will cherish it for the rest of my life. The first thought was 295 (his India cap number)," Agarwal said after the Day's play, reported PTI.
"It wasn't easy to get hold of those emotions and focus there, but it needed to be done. I just stuck to my plans and just kept telling myself, there is a plan that I have to go through and I am just going to stick to that. Even though it was overwhelming, it was good and I am happy with the way I started."
During his innings of 76 runs, Agarwal looked much more comfortable playing Nathan Lyon, who has been the leading wicket-taker in the series so far. The right-hander also revealed that he had all the support from the seniors who advised him to make the opportunity count.
"It's a big stage, and a big
"I am happy but obviously I would have liked more (runs). I would definitely take 76 rather than take something less than that. That said I would have liked to go on, and score more runs and stay not out at the end of the day," Agarwal said.
India had come into the match with two new openers, one was the debutant and the other was Hanuma Vihari, who until now was batting in the middle order. Agarwal praised his opening partner and went on to say that even though their partnership was not a huge one they still played out the new ball. Agarwal and Vihari batted for more than an hour, playing out almost twenty overs.
"Hanuma Vihari is a good player. He has got tons and tons of runs in Ranji Trophy. He has got runs in 'A' cricket and he has got a triple hundred at No. 3.
"So, I don't think it was too hard for him. He adjusted very well. We started off very well. Though we might not have got a big score, we did manage to play a lot of balls, which was good," he said, about the opening partnership.
