Bangladesh's stand-in skipper Mahmudullah asserts that his side have a lot to prove in the upcoming tri-nation T20 Nidahas Trophy to be played against India and Sri Lanka this month. Mahmudullah adds that their opening match against India is the key to having a successful tournament outing.

The Bangladesh national team were handed a huge blow after the news of their skipper Shakib Al Hasan not being able to lead the side in the upcoming Nidahas Trophy broke out, as he failed to recover from a finger injury sustained in January. The 2-0 loss in the T20 series again Sri Lanka recently showed that the Bangladesh side still have some way to go before they establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the T20 format. Before the team could depart for Colombo, Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah stated that they have a lot to prove ahead of tough challenge that awaits them in the sub-continent nation.

"I think there are question marks over our strength and ability in this format, considering we did not play to our potential in the recent past," Mahmudullah said.

"This is a good platform for us to show our true potential and if we can bring out the best from everyone, we are hopeful that we can go a long way [in the series]. Our aim is to clinch the trophy. We must make sure [we don't forget] that we have a lot of things to prove," Mahmudullah told reporters on Sunday.

In the past one year, Bangladesh have played a total of six T20Is and so far only three batsmen have managed to score over 100 runs - Soumya Sarkar (205), Mahmudullah (146) and Mushfiqur Rahim (110). As a bowling unit, Bangladesh are still looking for someone apart from Mustafizur Rahman who can keep the opposition batsmen guessing.

But skipper Mahmudullah reiterated that the team needs to have a good start in their opener against India in order to do well in the tournament.

"The first game is very important. If we can win the opening game we will pick the momentum early and it will be a driving factor as we progress in the tournament," he added.
