IPL 2018 | David Warner and Steve Smith will not play if CA ban them, reveals BCCI official
A BCCI official has confirmed that Steve Smith and David Warner will not play any part of the upcoming edition of the IPL if Cricket Australia decided to ban them. After the CA recalled the players from SA today, James Sutherland is expected to announce the final verdict sometime tomorrow.
The trio of Smith, Warner, and Cameron Bancroft has been asked return back home before the fourth Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg as Cricket Australia’s investigation confirmed that the three players had the complete knowledge of the ball-tampering scandal and discussed the same in the dressing room. Many former cricketers, Australian and foreign, have criticized the move and have piled on the pressure on Cricket Australia to take action against the players.
The issue has intensified to such an extent that Smith decided to step down as the captain of not just the Australian cricket team but also as the skipper of the Rajasthan Royals. With the IPL scheduled to start on April 7, many have raised questions about their participation in the tournament as well. “To be honest, I don’t understand what all the cry is about. If the CA goes ahead and bans them, there is no way that the IPL franchises can accommodate them, just like Andre Russell had to skip the IPL after he was caught violating doping clauses. If CA says that they have decided to ban the two players, that is where it all ends for them as far as IPL 11 is concerned. The IPL GC actually has no role,” an unnamed BCCI official told CricketNext.
The upcoming edition of the IPL begins on April 7 with Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
