I can hit bigger sixes than Kohli, so why do I need to follow his diet?, asks Mohammad Shahzad

Afghanistan’s Mohammad Shahzad has time and again been on the receiving end of critics when it comes to his lack of fitness. The Afghan legend, however, replied that he doesn’t need to work on his fitness like the way Virat Kohli does when he can hit longer sixes than the Indian skipper.

The celebrated Afghan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has a minor setback in terms of his fitness. Due to his rather stout figure at a height of 5’8’’ and overweight body, there have been a few negative comments in this respect. The man, however, plays in his own style and has proven himself on many occasions and has played the most number of T20I matches than anyone in world cricket. The burly man stated that he does work a lot on his fitness but doesn’t believe in compromising on food at the same time and went on to say that he cannot be expected to have an extreme fitness regime like Kohli.

“Jitna lambachakkawoh (Kohli) maartehain, main unsezyaada maar saktaa hoon, zaroorat kya hainunkitarahitna diet karne ki?( I can hit bigger sixes than Kohli so why do I need to follow his diet?,” says he.

Shahzad has been a man of controversy and has had a share of mishaps that made him the talk of the hour on a few occasions. The extent of his weight-loss failure resulted in a one-year doping ban that was imposed on him and it was only recently that he got back into his team after serving the ban. He was further charged with a two-game suspension after inflicting damage to the ground at the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe due to a silly outburst after being dismissed.

After serving this sentence, he came back to play the final of the World Cup qualifier against the West Indies where he won the ‘man of the match’ award. Such events make one wonder why a star player like himself would invite trouble and he simply responds to this by saying that mistakes are what makes us human.

“Dekhiye galtitohinsaanse hi hotihain (To err is human). I have had two cups of coffee with you and who knows I might test positive after this,” Shahzad said.

Shahzad claims to have a good connection with the Indian cricketers and looks up to Dhoni, who is his close friend. He says that he and Dhoni have chatted on for hours together after many matches on general affairs like two close pals.

“I try to hit it like Dhoni. It is always nice to catch up with the Indian cricketers. They are very warm. I have always looked up to Dhoni and now I have the pleasure of knowing him. I have played against India three-four times and after the match gets over, I have dropped in at Dhoni’s room and chatted for hours.

“He usually asks me ‘what’s happening in Afghanistan’ and at my home. We don’t tend to talk a lot about wicket-keeping and batting, it is just regular stuff about life. His room is always open for a chat but yes, it is tough to reach him on his mobile number.

“Even Suresh and Shikhar Bhai are very warm people,” says Shahzad, who like most of his teammates, is a Bollywood fan with his favourite actors being Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan.
