Rohit Sharma has reportedly been named the captain for India's first T20 International against Ireland, which will be played on June 27 in Dublin. However, he will hand over the captaincy to regular skipper Virat Kohli for leading the side for the second game when he returns from his county stint.

Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain of India’s limited-overs format, would lead India in the first T20I against Ireland at Dublin, as claimed by a close source of BCCI, reported Times Now. Despite knowing the fact that Virat Kohli will not be available for the first game due to his county commitment with English club Surrey, BCCI had named Virat Kohli in the squad that led to a confusion.

Clarifying the issue, the BCCI source claimed that they didn’t mention it because it would have created more confusion, had they named separate captains for two T20 fixtures in a two-match series, and it was quite obvious that in Kohli's the absence Rohit would take charge.

“If we had named a separate captain for the first T20I, and Kohli for the second match, it would have led to more confusion. Obviously, Rohit Sharma would lead in the first game and Kohli will be back for the next,” a source told as reported by Times Now.

As per Kohli’s schedule, he would land in Ireland in the night hours, covering a distance of 501 kM, to play the second T20 match next evening. Rohit will hand over the charge to Kohli once he becomes a part of the squad for the second T20I on June 29.

The first T20I will be the fifth instance that Rohit will be leading India in a T20I. He made his captaincy debut in T20I format against Sri Lanka during the home series last year. Later, he led the team in the third T20I against South Africa in February this year, when Kohli missed the game due to a stiff back.

Rohit, who is currently leading Mumbai Indians in IPL, was appointed as deputy to Kohli before the tour of Sri Lanka last year. From then, he has led India in four T20Is and three ODIs.
