Poor umpiring has been one of the biggest downfalls in Indian Premier League this season but when BCCI had a chance to start things afresh in the Womenâs T20 Challenge, they failed miserably. Trailblazersâ Beth Mooney was given marching orders despite replays clearly showing the bowler overstepping.
BCCI had taken a huge step towards promoting Womenâs cricket when they went on with the nationâs first of its kind exhibition Womenâs T20 challenge match, featuring the Supernovas and Trailblazers. Harmanpreet Kaur, Supernovasâ captain, decided to see how things proceed and opted to field. And it worked wonderfully for the Indian skipper as Alyssa Healy and Smriti Mandhana were seen returning to the pavilion after adding just 21 runs to the scoreboard.
However, with what could be a respectable target still uncertain in a one-off inaugural match, Trailblazers were still very much in the game as Beth Mooney and Suzie Bates at the pitch. The incident in question took place in the third over when Megan Schutt took the wicket of Beth Mooney. Mooneyâs attempt to clear the first circle in the fielding restriction saw Supernovasâ Veda Krishnamurthy take a stunning catch.Â
Mooney was returning back when a precautionary third-umpire call was taken. The replays pretty blatantly suggested that Schutt had overstepped in her delivery with the crowd and the commentators more than convinced that Mooney would be called back. However, to everyoneâs shock, she was given out. This comes after some frivolous umpiring in IPL on the crucial last doubleheader weekend last week.
