Cricket Australia selectors have opted to rest Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, and Mitch Marsh from the upcoming T20I against South Africa and the following three-match series against India. Justin Langer opined that Lyon and Starc would be better off playing the Sheffield Shield tournament.

It’s been an eventful year for the Australian cricket team as they continue to go through a period of transition and attempt to recover from the whole ‘Sandpapergate’ incident. The Aussies will prepare to host the Proteas in a one-off T20I game before they enter a full-fledged home series against Virat Kohli & Co.

As per reports, Cricket Australia have opted to rest the likes of spinner Nathan Lyon, pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Mitch Marsh for the upcoming game against South Africa and the T20I series against India as well. Coach Justin Langer suggested that along with veteran fast-bowler Peter Siddle, the trio would be better off playing Sheffield Shield cricket in order to be prepared for a busy summer on home soil which featured four Tests against India and two against Sri Lanka.

Marcus Stoinis and Jason Behrendorff have been included in the 13-man squad and will get a chance to impress for a single T20 against the Proteas and three against Kohli’s boys.

“We know coming off the back of the tour to the UAE, a huge summer at home, and the World Cup and Ashes just around the corner that we have to get the balance right between playing our best T20 team and preparing for the upcoming Test series.

“While I know all four have a desire to be playing for Australia in every format, with a really tough Test series against India coming up, we believe their best preparation is to go back and get some really good cricket under their belts in the Sheffield Shield,” Langer told AFP sources.

Aaron Finch-led Australia have been lacking positive results off late. The Aussies tasted defeat in 17 of their 19 one-dayers and were humbled by a margin of 3-0 by Pakistan in a T20 series in the United Arab Emirates last month. Langer backed the pair of Marcus and Jason to shine if given an opportunity in the upcoming matches.

“Marcus is such a versatile player, he’s a powerful middle-order batsman and he provides us with another solid bowling option. Jason Behrendorff has also earned a spot in the squad after returning to full fitness. Tactically we believe it’s important to have a good left-arm swing bowler at our disposal for the four matches,” Langer added.

Squad: Aaron Finch (capt), Alex Carey, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, D’Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa
