Ramesh Powar’s contract as coach of the Indian women’s cricket team is set to end on Friday and the feud with Mithali Raj may cost the former India spinner his job if they opt against a contract renewal. Powar has accused Raj of misusing her power and causing all sorts of chaos in the Indian team.

The controversy surrounding former India women’s team captain, Mithali Raj, and team coach Ramesh Powar has been a very public affair over the past week. While Raj claims to be the victim in the whole scenario, Powar’s recent report has painted her to be the cause of the whole problem.

The BCCI and CoA authorities will certainly be left in a dilemma as they will have to come to an amicable resolution to sort out the issues for all parties involved as soon as possible. However, Powar may pay the price for his role in the whole saga.

The former India spinner had a contract with the BCCI to stay as coach of the women’s team till November 30. In a report by TOI, sources inside BCCI have revealed that the board is not keen to continue with Powar as coach in the wake of the continuing blame game between Mithali and Powar which has had adverse effects on the morale of the rest of the Indian team.

BCCI officials are upset that Powar reportedly acted on a “phone call from a very influential member of BCCI” and opted to leave Mithali out of the team even after she got back-to-back fifties in the knock-out matches and earned two Player of the Match awards. The board is also annoyed by the fact that the head coach didn’t show the spine to stand up against the pressure created from outside to drop Mithali. They would have preferred if the former KXIP player had a dialogue with Raj instead of just keeping her in the dark over certain issues.

“Powar should have spoken to Mithali instead of dropping her straightaway after a phone call from Mumbai on the day of the match. This isn’t cricket. Powar’s conflict with Mithali has ensured that he can’t continue as the coach of India,” a source said.
