Khaleel Ahmed gets a demerit point along with official warning for Marlon Samuels send-off
Rookie pacer Khaleel Ahmed was found breaching the level one code of conduct rules of ICC and was duly punished for his uncalled for behaviour as he was handed a demerit point along with an official warning. Four demerit points within 24 months lead to one Test match or two limited-overs ban.
India made a strong comeback in the ODI series against the Windies after winning the fourth ODI. They now lead the series 2-1. With only one more match to go, the visitors can at best manage to draw the series as the second game ended in a tie. The fourth match yesterday saw Windies losing the one-sided encounter where Rohit Sharma outperformed everyone on the batting front by scoring a century and Khaleel Ahmed picked career best figure of 3/13 outperforming his experienced counterparts like Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Apart from picking three wickets, Ahmed also picked a warning and a demerit point due to his behaviour which was deemed provocative by the Umpires. He was found breaching the Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
The charges were pressed by the on-field umpires Ian Gould and Anil Chaudhary, third umpire Paul Wilson, as well as fourth umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin. They were of the view that he violated Article 2.5 of the Code which is “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.
The incident for which Khaleel Ahmed was penalised took place when he picked the wicket of Marlon Samuels and moved aggressively towards the batsman which the umpires deemed provocative and levelled the charges. After the match, the bowler accepted the charges and did not contest the punishment by the match Referee Chris Broad.
