Reports | Rs 225 crore bets were placed in TNPL game
BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has been on red alert in the past few weeks with multiple reports of corruption in the various T20 leagues in the country. After reports of players involved with the bookies, the unit has identified that Rs. 225 crores was in play during a Tamil Nadu Premier League game.
Multiple reports of betting in India has startled BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit, who have been put on constant alert and the unit has expressed serious concerns over the corruption issue. Further, the unit also asked the board to consider pulling a plug on some of the leagues, where bookies and corruption were involved heavily.
According to the reports from The Indian Express, “ACU has, in a confidential report submitted to the BCCI, highlighted that a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match this year between Tuti Patriots and Madurai Panthers witnessed betting of around 24 million pounds (about Rs 225 crore) on the international site Betfair.”
The money and the stake involved grew so vigorously that Betfair had to stop taking any bets for the TNPL matches involving the franchise Tuti Patriots. Further, the reports added that the odds that was monitored by the betting companies grew in multi-fold.
Last week, BCCI’s president Sourav Ganguly was questioned on the prevailing issue of corruption and betting in the Indian T20 leagues. Ganguly, in the press conference earlier said that two TNPL franchises have been suspended following their involvement in match-fixing. However, Tamil Nadu Cricket were quick enough in replying that no franchises were suspended. On the other hand, two co-owners were suspended on advice from the TNCA’s internal inquiry committee.
“We are dealing with it, we are getting the anti-corruption system right. We have to get the best anti-corruption people and make it stronger. We will assess it, next year if it (corruption) doesn’t stop, if it doesn’t work then we will think of something else,” Ganguly said in regards to the prevailing corruption.
