Excited about the World Test Championship, reveals Cheteshwar Pujara
Cheteshwar Pujara had said that every player in the team is excited about the World Test Championship 2019 and had started discussing the possibilities already. He had also expressed his passion for Test cricket, calling it as the purest format of the game and asserts that it would survive.
Cheteshwar Pujara conveyed that Test cricket will regain its importance as the boards of cricket around the world had been thinking about the survival of the longest format in the game. He had also mentioned that he spoke to other players in the team about the World Test Championship that is about to commence later this year and that every other player is as excited about it as he is.
“Not just me. I have spoken to other players and all of them are very excited. We have already started discussing about the format and points system. I am sure Test cricket will get a lot of importance going forward with all the boards thinking about the survival of Test cricket. That is the purest format of the game and it will survive. I have no doubt about it,“ Pujara said during his interview with the ToI.
The specialist Test batsman also recalled the memorable series win against Australia early this year and he deemed the first ever overseas Test victory in Australia as a special occasion, not only for the team but also for him on a personal front. Pujara scored about 521 runs in 4 matches with an average of almost 75 and he had batted for more than 500 minutes or more in an innings twice during the series.
“It was a special series for me personally as well as the team. All the players said that this is the most special overseas win. We have a young team and none of the team members had the experience of winning an overseas Test series. But we want to get better and stay at No.1. We don't want to get carried away,“ he said reminiscing about the historic victory.
The Gujarati batsman shared the importance of preparing well before the series to play under tough conditions. He felt that his knock on Day 1 in Adelaide helped him gain more confidence and dominate the series throughout.
“Everything changed after the first innings (in Adelaide). Whenever you go for a big tour, preparation is important. I prepared very well. Then I just tried to execute my skills and I knew what the bowlers could do because I had been there in 2014. I knew their strategies and what line and length they would bowl. I just wanted to bat normally,” he added.
Pujara had brought forward the importance of playing to the situation and what it demands. He had also confessed that he doesn’t really worry about what people say as he had always believed in his ability and did what the team required at any stage.
