Virat Kohli can score 100 international centuries, believes Mohammad Azharuddin
Mohammad Azharuddin is of the opinion that if Virat Kohli can stay fit, he has the ability to get to 100 international tons in his career. The former skipper also highlighted the importance of playing domestic cricket for someone like MS Dhoni who is not a part of the Test side anymore.
Kohli scored his 39th ODI century to take the Indian team to a win against the Aussies in the second ODI on Tuesday. Kohli has been very consistent in all the formats of the game and with 25 Test hundreds as well, he has already 64 centuries in his 11-year-old international cricket career.
Former India captain has heaped praises for Kohli for his consistency in international cricket. He is of the opinion that Kohli staying fit will ensure that the skipper goes on to score a 100 centuries across the formats.
"Virat Kohli's consistency is very good. If he stays fit, he will reach the 100-century mark. He is way ahead of many great players as far as his consistency is concerned. He is a great player and India have hardly lost whenever he has scored a century," Azharuddin told Sports Tak.
Apart from the Indian skipper, MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik also played important roles in the Adelaide ODI where the Indians levelled the series 1-1 against the hosts. Azharuddin also added that whenever the Indian top-order has performed, the team has done well in the batting department.
"If you look at the trend whenever India's top three score runs, we go on to win the match. Unfortunately, in the previous match we lost three early wickets, Rohit Sharma did score a century but we lost. But today, Virat Kohli batted extremely well and MS Dhoni too played well. Dhoni even got tired in the end but he kept his wicket intact. Dinesh Karthik also batted well. Overall, India's performance was very good," Azhar said.
Underlining the importance of domestic cricket, Azharuddin said about the lack of match practice for the wicket-keeper who is no more a part of Test matches and was out of the T20Is as well.
“If you are out of practice and not playing domestic cricket, it becomes difficult to adjust to international cricket. I think that was reason Dhoni played slow innings in the first ODI but today he batted well. It was a match-winning knock."
