India vs New Zealand | Not our best effort, asserts Kane Williamson after Napier ODI loss
After losing the first ODI of the series against India in Napier, Kane Williamson has mentioned that it was not a great effort by the home side to start the series. The Kiwi skipper also added that it was not the traditional Napier track which used to have pace and bounce for the bowlers to exploit.
India managed to get off to a great start in New Zealand as they registered an easy eight-wicket win in the first ODI. While it was the efforts of Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal that restricted the Kiwis to a score of 157 in 38 overs, Shikhar Dhawan turned on the heat on the other side of the break with an unbeaten 75.
Coming to the press conference after the game, Williamson has opined that it was not the best effort by the team and they were too slow to adapt as batsmen.
"Certainly not our best effort. With the bat we were far too slow to adapt. Coming back here, the traditional Napier surface has got a little more pace and bounce and they tend to be high scoring games. It certainly wasn't that surface but it required a bit more smarts and we didn't show that. We never really got going and built any momentum,” Williamson said after the match, reported Stuff.
"On these surfaces, if you can build a partnership and take it deep, you hit that 230-240 mark and you're in the game. But we were a long way off that today."
Williamson was the only batsman from the home side who looked good at the crease while all others struggled against the Indian bowlers. The skipper called for a better application of mind in the upcoming games as according to him, they lacked that in today’s game.
"The cricket smarts is something we want to be a little bit better at. It's something we do pride ourselves on but it wasn't there today. The slower bowlers were quite effective," explained the Kiwi skipper.
"Not our best performance but you look at it in small parts. It's not about jumping to a knee-jerk reaction
