Jonty Rhodes has confirmed that he is in the running to be India’s next fielding coach having given his name for the same after the contracts of India’s present coaching staff ended with the World Cup exit. Rhodes stated that he loves the country as well as coaching and hopes he gets the job.

The contracts of India’s coaching and support staff ran up until the recently concluded World Cup which has led to the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators invite applications for the various posts. The deadlines for the same has been announced as five in the evening on July 30, though the contracts of the present staff, including that of fielding coach R Sridhar, has been extended by 45 days to cover the upcoming tour of the Carribean scheduled for the next two months.

Jonty Rhodes, a celebrated fielder and one of the men responsible for elevating the agility and fitness required to play the game to what it is today, has stated that he has also applied to become a part of India’s coaching staff in the capacity of fielding coach.

“Yes, I have applied for the position of India’s new fielding coach. My wife and I love the country, and it has already given us so much — we have 2 children born in India,” Rhodes told CricketNext, reported News18.

The Proteas is widely remembered for his jaw dropping catches and lightning quick run outs from the point position. He has already served for long as the fielding coach of IPL outfit Mumbai Indians and the team won three titles in his tenure.

“I have spent 9 seasons as MI fielding coach based in Mumbai. I have seen incredible growth in athleticism and fielding ability in India over the past 5 years and really respect what has been achieved. I like to think there are a few elements that I can add to what they have already achieved. I have spent two years away from high performance coaching and have spent most of my time focusing on development and grassroots coaching,” Rhodes added.

Rhodes quit at the end of the 2018 season of the IPL and has since concentrated on coaching at the lower levels.

“I am a coach who loves coaching and let’s face it, the Indian cricket team is the busiest in the world, so great opportunity to be busy and doing what you love amongst players and a team that I really respect,” the 49-year-old stated.

Probably the first ever player to be so renowned for his fielding skills, Rhodes admitted he has big ambitions for the team.

“I have seen from my time in India that parents don’t let their children take much risk, and my vision would be for the Indian team not to just be the team with lowest drop catch percentage, but also the team with highest half chance opportunity taken!” Rhodes concluded.
