Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza has acknowledged the missed run out opportunity of Kane Williamson as the game’s turning point but said that one shouldn’t blame Mushfiqur Rahim for it. He went on to praise the team’s performance and said they should be confident for their game against England.

In a close encounter at The Oval on Wednesday, New Zealand managed to edge Bangladesh by just two wickets chasing down a subpar target of 245 with 17 balls to spare. Though wickets kept falling at regular intervals, it was the 105 run stand for the third wicket between Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson that gave the Black Caps foothold in the game.

However, things could have been very different had Bangladesh capitalized on an opportunity they had got to eliminate the opposition skipper from the crease. When just at 8, Kane Williamson was running to the danger end and an accurate throw from Tamim Iqbal was all set to hit the stumps which would have ended Williamson's short stay at the crease. But in a horrendous misjudgement, Rahim tried to collect the ball in front of the stumps and broke the stumps with his elbow before the ball arrived.

“The turning point, I think (was) that run-out. Because they both [Williamson and Taylor] get set in that time. Mushi, I don't think we need to go after him. That throw was straight, and then as a keeper, it's very difficult to [decide if] it was straight or not. He wants to pick the ball and suddenly it hits his elbow, I guess. That sort of mistake always happens. So I don't think we should go after him. It's part of the game. It's happened. No one wants to make this mistake," said Mashrafe Mortaza said during the press conference, reported Cricbuzz.

As far as performances go, on a wicket that looked good for batting, Bangladesh disappointed after 6 batsmen got scores of 20+ runs but apart from Shakib Al Hasan, none of them could capitalize on the starts and could only manage to put up 244 on the board. However, their resolve in the next innings almost made up for it as a display of disciplined bowling almost took them across the line.

"I don't think we played badly today. We should bring some of the positive stuff we get from here, and defending 244, everyone knows on this wicket at The Oval, it's not easy. I think we are very close today. A few runs short, but I think we are very close,” Mortaza added.

The Tigers play their next match against the tournament favourites and though the odds are overwhelming, the skipper is confident of pulling off an upset if they are at their best.

"I think they are one of the biggest sides in this tournament. It's not going to be easy, we know that. But again, if we can play our best possible cricket, you never know. It's going to be difficult," Mortaza concluded.
