ICC World Cup 2019 | Mushfiqur Rahim walks off from training after getting hit on right hand
Bangladesh wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim was the latest victim of the injury scares that have taken over his national team after he was seen walking to the sidelines on being hit on his right hand in the nets. Further updates on the status of his injury, if he has sustained one, are awaited.
Never before have Bangladesh have had a greater chance of making an impact on the global stage, as they had entered the tournament as the dark horses having the potential to win it all. Their skipper Mashrafe Mortaza had admitted to the huge expectations the fans had from them this time around, while veteran all-rounder and former captain Shakib Al Hasan had said this is the first time they had a genuine chance of lifting the trophy come July.
However, ever since they kicked off their campaign, injuries have come in quick succession and in varying degrees. While Shakib Al Hasan and Mortaza have been suffering from niggles for quite some time now, the list of players who have suffered from some sort of injury so far in the tournament included Tamim Iqbal, Rubel Hossain, Mahmudullah Riyad and Mustafizur Rahman, making it an astonishing total of seven out of fifteen players.
To add to it, senior player and probably their most in-form top order batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was recently spotted walking off the ground with his right glove off, along with an official after suffering a blow in the nets. The 32-year-old had scored a brilliant 78 in the opener against Proteas to earn them their only win of the campaign so far. However, unfortunately, his most memorable moment in the tournament for the majority has been his fluffing up of a golden opportunity to run out Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson who then went on to play a match-winning innings.
The team has just three points from four matches, after having lost to New Zealand in a close affair and followed up with a huge defeat against England, a match in which Rahim scored a sturdy 44, before their match against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain. This has left them reeling at the seventh spot, having the same points as the West Indies, their next opponents, though the Carribean team is in the sixth courtesy of a better net run rate.
